Autism Diet!
Autism diets are all the rage in the internet world of today. Often we hear of GFCF diets which are simply gluten and casein free diets. We here of miraculous recoveries and this being a complete cure for Autism. In this article we will investigate Autism diets fairly and in depth. Let us get to the bottom of this, shall we? The Gluten free diet is the most popular diet recommended around the Autism diet circles. Essentially the diet is removing glutinous foods from the diet. Unfortunately this is many American foods we have come to love. Casein free diets essentially remove dairy from your diet which includes milk, cheese and so on. combine the two Autism diets and you have the GFCF or gluten free casein free diet.
First off the GFCF diet is not full proof; it is not a cure for autism as some have claimed. The statistics are around 20% of those affected by Autism have some gastrointestinal problems leading to chronic conditions such as diarrhea, constipation and so on. Roughly 65% of these Autistic children show positive side effects from a GFCF diet. So GFCF diets improve the quality of life for less than 10% of the Autism population. Further gluten free diets take a significant amount of time to see results often months. GFCF diets are relatively expensive as the food is specially ordered.
If your child has Autism and you are considering the GFCF diet then your first order of business is to verify through your Child's doctor if digestive problems exist. If present then GFCF diet might be helpful for your child. Removal of diarrhea and eczema are the common improvements associated with this Autism diet. Some people have reported changes in behavior and functioning. In our sons case removing milk from his diet removed chronic diaper rash. Also, removal of fruit juice helped with this. We have not noticed any other improvements as far as behavior or cognitive abilities are concerned. Our son still eats cheese and other dairy products without issue. Please make sure to check with your doctor before starting any Autism diet regiment. Some of these diets could have unattended consequences which could lead to further difficulties.
The stress involved in implementing this diet both emotionally and financially is very serious and must be considered. Sure if the diet works and the improvements ark great then it could be worth it. This is why I can not stress the importance of determining with a tests from a physician the presence of any digestive issues or allergies to gluten or casein before considering this Autism diet. The trauma caused by the change in lifestyle could actually do more harm than good. In some cases this Autism diet has actually caused symptoms to become worse and new symptoms. I just cant imagine life without ice cream or cheese for that matter. If i had no choice then i would survive, but if i would not gain better health I think it would reduce the quality of my life.
