Autism Treatments and Therapies
Treating Autism is a daunting task and the vast amount of information available suggest that therapy started at early age is the most promising treatment for Autism. There are many different schools of thought on therapy regiments. Applied Behavioral Analysis is the most popular and has even gained the recommendation from the U.S. Surgeon general since 2001. Unfourtantly ABA is also the most expensive, averageing $85,000 a year. What is more disheartening is that this ABA treatment for autism is not covered by many insurane policies and is therefore unavailable to many of the autistic families in the country. The federal and state ran medicaid programs only allow an average of 6 weeks a year of therapy. ABA is an intensive autism treatment plan consisting of up to 40 hours a week in therapy. The large amount of time involved is the reason for the high cost. It is also the reason for the high succes rate. There is opposition to ABA due to its " dog training" feel. Some people claim it leads to a robot like effect in the autistic children who have been treated with ABA.
